Dental treatment
abroad
Information for patients considering treatment overseas, and for those who have already received dental treatment abroad.
Dental tourism can feel like a quick, cost-effective solution — especially when clinics advertise dramatic smile transformations at prices lower than you might expect in the UK. We understand why that’s appealing. This page gives you an honest overview of what to consider before making that decision.
Understanding
the risks
Dental treatment isn’t just about the day it is completed. Many procedures rely on careful planning, safe and appropriate materials, good communication, and reliable aftercare to protect your teeth and gums long term. When treatment is carried out overseas, follow-up can be harder to access, and any complications may become more complex and more expensive to resolve once you are back home.
Complex treatments carry higher risk
Multi-stage treatments such as dental implants, veneers, crowns and orthodontics are particularly high risk. Problems that emerge months later — such as peri-implant inflammation, poorly fitting restorations, or incompatible components — can involve more complex treatment than expected, and the cost may end up higher than the original treatment.
Hidden costs reduce perceived savings
The advertised price is rarely the full picture. Travel and accommodation, time off work, return trips for complications, remedial treatment at home, emergency investigations and the need to replace restorations that cannot be safely repaired can all add significantly to the overall cost. In some cases, patients find the total cost exceeds what treatment would have cost in the UK.
Communication and accountability
If problems arise, resolving them from a distance is difficult. Different regulatory environments mean that the standards, rights and recourse available to you may differ significantly from those in the UK. Getting records, X-rays, and material specifications from an overseas provider can also be challenging.
Our position
We are always happy to support patients in making genuinely informed decisions about their dental care. We do not advise for or against specific providers or destinations. Our role is to ensure you have accurate clinical information about your oral health — whether you are planning treatment or have already had it abroad.
Why choose Pont Steffan Dental?
- Regulated UK care — all clinicians are registered with the GDC and work to clear professional standards with full accountability
- Long-term relationship — we keep comprehensive records and know your dental history
- Continuity — follow-up, adjustments and aftercare are straightforward
- No hidden costs — all fees are confirmed in writing before treatment begins
- Two-year guarantee — on all fillings and crowns
Questions to ask before booking abroad
- Is the clinician registered with an equivalent regulatory body?
- What happens if something goes wrong — who covers the remedial cost?
- Will you be able to return for follow-up appointments?
- Do you have access to your full clinical records, X-rays and materials used?
Continuing your care
at home
If you have returned from dental treatment abroad, we can provide ongoing care for your oral health. We will assess your current dental health, take any necessary X-rays, and give you an honest picture of your situation going forward.
We take no position on decisions you have already made. Any treatment we provide will be based on your current clinical needs and will be independent of the work carried out overseas.
Please note: we are unable to adjust, repair, or take clinical responsibility for dental work carried out abroad, particularly where that work is extensive or where we do not have access to the materials, records or clinical specifications involved.
What we can do
- Carry out a full clinical examination of your current oral health
- Take digital X-rays where appropriate
- Give you an honest assessment of your situation and options
- Provide emergency or temporary care to relieve pain or manage acute problems where clinically appropriate
- Provide a new treatment plan focused on your current health and long-term stability
No judgement
We understand patients make decisions about dental care for very real financial reasons. Our role is to support your dental health from where you are now — without judgement.
